NTU Architecture Subject Group

The Beacon Theatre

The scheme brings together a diverse community of people from the surrounding area, by welcoming them into the theatre and performing arts spaces.

The building has two entrances, one of which is focused on the community groups that will benefit from the dance and music studios, and then the grand façade, which provides access to the theatre space. The two wings of the building act as bookends to the large theatre, which is at the heart of the design.

In most theatres, the fly tower has a functional purpose for the stage, whereas in this scheme the concept of the fly tower is used architecturally as a beacon by which the building is illuminated through the timber structure when performances are taking place. The colonnade that wraps around the façade blurs the threshold between the community and the theatrical space within. The social spaces create viewpoints across the River Trent for visitors to enjoy during the intermissions in performances.
