CRÆFT UNION

The Cræft Union is a school of design teaching one-year courses in Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Experimental Materials.

The school will be created with sustainability at the heart of the design, using natural, innovative materials to create a low carbon design. Along with this theme, there are the themes of ‘Collaboration’, ‘Live Projects’, and ‘Wellbeing and Community’.

The courses in the school will share modules and projects to encourage ‘Collaboration’ and the expansion of the skill sets needed for each course. The site is a green and wooded site, where ‘Live Projects’ can be carried out using local materials to allow students to learn with their hands, in harmony with nature. ‘Wellbeing and Community’ is an overarching theme at the Cræft Union, with the curriculum and design both considering how to improve wellness of students.

The community is drawn onto the site to use public facilities - a marketplace, start-up businesses, café, library and playground.

BArch Architecture

The BArch (Hons) in Architecture course is focused on the creative and practical development of architectural design, investigated in a studio environment through a series of carefully considered practical and theoretical projects in a variety of spatial, social, cultural and topographical situations.

The purpose of the course is to align architectural concepts, thinking, techniques and values with current architectural thought and practice. It involves strategic thinking and creative imagination; problem-solving and research tasks; attention to detail and tectonic resolution; traditional and digital forms of representation; and public presentations and reviews. This course addresses the challenges of designing for diverse communities and cultures and develops Part 1 graduates with creative vision, practical skills and an ethical position in respect of the role of the architect in a globalised world.
